The domain industry is entering a new era with the upcoming launch of the next round of gTLDs in 2026. To assist organizations in this complex process, the Domain Name Association (DNA) has launched a Service Provider Directory. This directory connects TLD applicants with qualified service providers who can guide them through the stages – from application to launch.
We are excited to announce that Christa Taylor, Co-Founder of TLDz, has played a key role in developing the directory. As a member of the independent Advisory Council, Christa has helped define the criteria for service provider inclusion. This ensures that the directory will feature only the most qualified and trustworthy vendors.
Applying for a Top-Level Domain (TLD) is challenging. It requires strategic planning, technical expertise, legal compliance, and marketing acumen. For many new applicants this can be overwhelming. ICANN, which manages domain names, does not endorse specific consultants or vendors. As a result, applicants are left to navigating a fragmented landscape.
The DNA’s Service Provider Directory, which launched in June 2025 at the ICANN meeting in Prague, is here to bridge that gap. The directory serves as a trusted resource for organizations – whether cities, brands, or other entities – seeking the right partners to guide them through the TLD application process and beyond. The directory includes service providers who specialize in areas such as business planning, string selection, registry operations, DNS security, rights protection, and marketing strategies.
Christa’s expertise has been integral to the creation of the DNA’s Service Provider Directory. As a member of the Advisory Council, she helped establish the criteria for which service providers are eligible to be included in the directory, ensuring that it features only the highest-quality and most reliable partners for TLD applicants. Her deep knowledge of the full TLD lifecycle – from strategic planning and financial modeling to launch campaigns and long-term growth – will help future applicants navigate the complexities of launching their own TLDs.
With the directory now live, prospective TLD applicants can easily explore qualified providers and find the right partners to help them through every phase of the process.
While the Service Provider Directory is an excellent resource, it’s essential to remember that choosing the right provider is a strategic decision. At TLDz, we’ve worked across every stage of the TLD lifecycle, and we recommend the following tips for making the most of the directory:
Many providers focus primarily on the ICANN application process. However, launching a TLD involves much more. A truly valuable provider will offer comprehensive support, including business planning, use case definition, marketing, and ongoing growth strategies. Ask potential providers how they will assist you throughout the entire TLD lifecycle, not just the application phase.
Some service providers operate multiple aspects of the domain ecosystem, such as running their own TLDs or registrars. While this is not always a problem, conflicts of interest can arise. A provider may prioritize their own TLDs or registrars, potentially limiting resources or support for your project. Be sure to ask providers about any competing interests and how they will ensure your TLD receives the attention and support it needs.
When evaluating providers, don’t settle for vague claims of experience. Instead, ask for specifics: What role did they play in previous TLD projects? Were those TLDs successful? Request references, case studies, and detailed examples of their work. The more specific and transparent the provider is, the better.
A city TLD, a .brand, or a community TLD each comes with its own unique challenges. Therefore, choose a provider who understands the nuances of your specific type of TLD and can tailor their services to meet your needs. A good provider will ask insightful questions about your mission, audience, and long-term goals, helping to create a customized strategy for success.
The ICANN application process is just the beginning. After your TLD is launched, your provider should help you build a sustainable, growing registry. This includes developing a marketing strategy, building partnerships, engaging registrars, and ensuring that your TLD remains relevant and competitive over time. At TLDz, we focus on helping you grow your TLD into a successful brand that thrives in the long term
The decision to choose a service provider is a critical one that will impact the success of your TLD for years to come. While the DNA’s Service Provider Directory offers an excellent foundation, it’s important to thoroughly evaluate potential partners. Look for providers who offer comprehensive, long-term support and who understand your unique goals and vision.
Christa Taylor’s involvement in the DNA’s Advisory Council is a testament to TLDz’s commitment to helping TLD applicants succeed. We’ve been through every stage of the TLD lifecycle, and we’re here to ensure that your TLD doesn’t just launch – it thrives.
As the industry moves toward the next round of gTLD applications in 2026, the Service Provider Directory is an invaluable resource. Start by exploring the directory, and then dig deeper to find the right partners who will help you achieve long-term success.
